Qualicum Beach Seniors’ Fall Activities
Welcome back! It’s been a very unusual summer but we survived. Membership enrollment is going well and the winners of the draws are being contacted to collect their prizes. The benefits program is year-round so you can still take advantage of the discounts offered to our members by our local merchants, and they are substantial. So, if you don’t have your 2020-2021 membership yet, please use the application form on the website and send it to us along with your membership fee. We are planning to be at the Centre on Wednesdays from 10 – noon for those who would prefer to drop their registration forms off.
Special Event – Fun on the Farm
It’s the Autumn Equinox and we are planning a special Covid19 friendly special event on Monday, September 21 at Little Qualicum Cheese Works (Morningstar Farms) on Lowry’s Road in Parksville. The start time will be 11:30 a.m. running until 2:30 p.m. We will be barbequing gourmet bratwurst and European wieners and serving them with corn on the cob, barbequed beans and of course you can have sauerkraut if you wish. Music will be provided by The Ramblers. This is a fundraiser for the Centre and tickets will be $20 per person. There will be special door prizes and you will be able to take self-guided tours of the facilities. Bring your own chair and come on out to the farm.
For tickets and information contact Margaret Rothe at 250-852-5454.
What’s Happening At The Seniors’ Centre
We are in the process of finalizing discussions with the Town to offer our exercise programs at the Community Hall and Civic Centre. Yoga is now available on Wednesday mornings from 10 – 11 in the Lions Room at the Civic Centre. The programs at the Community Hall will include yoga, line dancing, Zomba Gold, cardio dance and Tai Chi. We are planning to start in late September so watch the website and look for the email updates.
Small group activities are being approved on a trial basis in our Seniors’ Activities Centre. So far, approvals have been granted to the Ukulele small group, Oceanside A Capella and TOPS. Several other applications are currently being reviewed. The amount of space in the Centre restricts the numbers of participants so any applications need to be reviewed to make sure that they comply with the Covid19 health requirements.
The Zoom activities are back again and a new photography program is up and running. Here are the links to the fall programs.
Please read the following disclaimer regarding participating in physical activities:

Special Event
I am attaching a link to a YouTube video an interview with David Hancock of the Hancock Wildlife Federation who is relocating an eagle nest in the French Creek area. Although this has been successfully carried out numerous times in other areas, it is a first for Vancouver Island. The plan is to install a webcam so that the return of the eagles in the spring and hopefully the start of a new family can be viewed live. The relocation is the result of combined efforts by French Creek House Ltd., Friends of French Creek Conservation Society. The Save the Estuary Society and the Hancock Wildlife Federation. French Creek House is funding the program. The YouTube link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95CTzFiwW3U Further information on this program is available on the Friends of French Creek Conservation Society website www.ffccs.ca
I am looking forward to all the new activities and special events. We will continue to make every effort to introduce new programs and activities.
See you soon.

How Can I Help or Get Help
The board of directors of the Qualicum Beach Seniors Activities Centre has received numerous offers from our members and their families to assist during the covid19 crisis.
Rather than setting up an independent data base to cross reference the volunteers with those persons who need assistance, the executive has reviewed the process currently being implemented by Beacon Buddies, a volunteer-run community service that matches people currently in voluntary self-isolation/quarantine with a neighbour who can help out with occasional basic out-of-home errands. Beacon Buddies was set up by The Nanaimo Beacon, an online satire news web site in Nanaimo, that suspended their satire site to help the Central Vancouver Island Communities when the covid19 crisis started.
The executive are of the opinion that the use of an existing service to match volunteers with those in need is a prudent and efficient method of achieving the goal to provide assistance to our membership.
If you would like to volunteer to assist or require assistance, please register on line through the attached link.
